Optimizing Operations and Maintenance with AI

One of the strongest arguments for moving legacy systems to the cloud is the reduction of operations and maintenance cost (O&M.) Artificial Intelligence (AI), both in its productive and generative applications, can act as an efficiency multiplier. AI presents an exciting opportunity to enhance a system’s predictive maintenance capabilities, optimize its resource allocation, and automate diagnostics and repairs, among other tasks. It can do all of this as it leverages the improved access to compute power in the cloud. Agentic AI presents new opportunities to optimize the everchanging O&M environment.
In an interview recorded earlier this year at the AWS Summit in Washington, D.C., Badri Sriraman, who leads our in-house innovation center, acknowledges the drag aging infrastructure has on enterprise systems. The issue becomes intractable when operations and maintenance (O&M) costs become so high they take up the budget that would otherwise be used for modernization and systems enhancements. For instance, a 2023 Government Accountability Office (GAO) report examined the 10 critical systems it identified most in need of modernization. Some of those systems were over 50 years old and, in total, cost the government upwards of $337 million annually to operate and maintain. Badri reveals in this special edition of the Federal Tech Podcast that AI can be used to address many of those concerns. Tune in and discover how AI may accelerate the transition to the cloud, further reducing O&M costs.
Writing in Govloop, our Chief Architect, Kartik Mecheri, goes further. He explains agentic AI may hold the key to optimizing O&M. Transcending AI which uses fixed algorithms, this next evolution of AI tools has the agency to independently interpret its environment using real-time data and adapt its process based on its goals. Moreover, when used in conjunction with edge computing, agentic AI becomes a particularly powerful tool as it engages and adapts to its environment.
